As Honda's best-known and best-loved car line, the 2009 Civic Sedan and Coupe continue to set the bar in the compact-car arena. Long considered the standard by which all other compacts are measured, the Civic is able to lure buyers thanks to its impressive fuel economy, unrivaled reliability and repair history and class-leading resale values. Once considered the Civic's only weak point, exterior styling is now one of the car's most appealing attributes. With its sharply raked windshield and low profile, the sleek Civic Coupe looks like nothing else on the road. The car's appeal to younger drivers has put Honda back into the good graces of the tuner and aftermarket crowd.
In addition to offering more in-cabin technology than we've come to expect, the 2009 Honda Civic also features the most visually futuristic interior of any vehicle on the market. Take a seat behind the wheel and your first impression is dominated by a uniquely sculpted steering wheel and an unconventional two-tier instrument panel. Technological highlights include an available navigation system and a broad array of digital audio options. Third, fourth and fifth passengers would be happier in the sedan's backseat than in the coupe's, because the sedan features about four more inches of legroom and two more inches of headroom than the cozy coupe. The fit, finish and design found inside the Civic are first-rate.

The 2009 Toyota Matrix offers a sporty, but practical and reasonably priced alternative to either mundane sub-compact cars or bulky crossover SUVs. Released as an early 2009 model, the new Matrix gets more appealing styling, an optional 158-horsepower 2.4-liter engine, crisper steering feel and more precise handling. The performance-oriented XRS trim level returns, as does optional all-wheel drive. As with the previous Matrix, there's plenty of room for four adults and the rear seats fold down to create a flat, voluminous cargo area. Main competitors for the Matrix include the MAZDA3, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Honda Civic and the Matrix' fraternal twins, the Toyota Corolla and Pontiac Vibe, which are all built in the same Canadian factory.
Interior
Despite its sporty exterior, the 2009 Matrix is an extremely practical sub-compact. The rear seats comfortably accommodate two full-sized adults. There's more than plenty of headroom both front and rear and legroom has been increased. The rear seats fold forward to create a flat cargo floor that will swallow large amounts of gear; however, the restyling cut about two cubic feet from the cargo volume. The front passenger's seat folds flat and can be employed as a computer table or to carry longer cargo. The high front seating position provides excellent visibility, and all trim levels have supportive sport seats.

The 2009 Honda Pilot is redesigned, gaining passenger and cargo space and new styling. This midsize crossover SUV seats eight, with 60/40 split folding benches in the 2nd and 3rd rows. The 2009 Pilot grows one inch wider and almost three inches in overall length and wheelbase compared to the 2003-2008 model. All Pilots get Honda's Variable Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation, which shuts down cylinders while cruising to save fuel. Standard safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags.
Interior.
Now we're talking. Wider than most rivals, it feels generously spacious and makes three-across child seats plausible. Honda puts lower child-seat hooks at all three second-row spots and one in the third row. Upper tether hooks are at all six rear seating slots.
If you tote many toddlers, or just like to choose where to strap the child seat, Pilot's your friend.
Second row slides fore-aft and has good leg and knee space. The backrest angle is adjustable for comfort. A single latch releases the second row to tilt and slide forward for an aisle to the third row. A bit stiff to operate in the test cars.
The third row is adult size — if people in the second row slide their seats ahead just a little and if you're not planning on riding in the way-back from Omaha to Denver for a coffee.
There's more room behind the third row, so you can fill all eight seats and still have room for luggage.
A well under the cargo floor opens more storage room. The center stack up front bristles with buttons and controls. Intimidating at first, but quickly learned, and far better than trying to minimize the number of controls via a joystick system or multiple-choice menu, both of those setups typically being illogical and annoying.
Plenty of cubbies and bins scattered about. The door panels have dual-level shelves. The dashboard offers a ledge above the glove box. The console has partitions and a roll-top cover.
All-in, quibbles and nits pale to near-insignificance, and the Honda asserts itself as comfortable, roomy inside but trim outside and quite maneuverable. It delivers sensible, but not boring, driving, riding, storing, toting.
Pilot comes across as pretty close to wonderful.
