Tzedekah: Ron Hershco, Kars 4 Kids & Others

Tzedekah is a holy thing and one of the most special things about Judaism.  Whether large family foundations or donors like Ron Hershco, charities from synagogues to hospitals, so many important charitable (tzedekah) causes.

Some quotes on the importance of tzedekah:

·       “Don’t use the chutzpa of a beggar as an excuse for not helping him.” Rabbi Shmelke of Nickelsburg

·       “The Torah regards us as custodians of money for the poor. We can take chances with our own funds, but not those that belong to others.” Rabbi Yitzchok Adlerstein

·       “To boast of the help you gave a brother in need is to cancel the good of your deed.” Samuel Ha-Nagid

·       “To him who has the means and refuses the needy, the Holy One says: Bear in mind, fortune is a wheel!” Rabbi Nachman

·       “Tzedakah is not about giving; Tzedakah is about being.” Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson

·       “Tzedakah is different than charity. Charity comes from the word charitus, which means heart. Tzedakah comes from the word tzedek, which means justice, so when you are giving tzedakah, you are not just making the world a better place by contributing to hospitals, synagogues, churches, or your favorite cause. You are in a position of bringing justice to the world, becoming as God-like as possible.” Celso Cukierkorn

·       “The meaning of man’s life lies in his perfecting the universe. He has to distinguish…and redeem the sparks of holiness scattered throughout the darkness of the world.” Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

And don’t forget Kars 4 Kids and others…

·       “The Torah begins and ends with acts of caring, loving kindness.” Rabbi Simla’i

·       “May my lot fall among those who collect tzedakah, and not among those who distribute tzedakah.” R. Yosei

·       Yehoshua taught: “More than the householder does for the poor, the poor do for the householder.” Vayikra Rabba 34:8.

·       Tzedakah and acts of kindness are the equivalent of all the mitzvot of the Torah.” Jerusalem Talmud, Pe’ah 1:1.

·       “Greater is tzedakah than all the sacrifices.” Talmud, Sukkah 49b

·       “If only the people who lived in the generation of the Flood and the people of Sodom had given tzedakah, they would not have perished.” Midrash Zutta

·       “Great is tzedakah, for since the day that the world was created until this day the world stands upon tzedakah.” Midrash Tanna d’Vei Eliyahu Zutta
