The Importance of Community

From Rabbis to entrepreneurs, kids to parents community is so vitally important.  There are so many different mechanisms which go into Judaism – from people like Mark Birnbaum to Alan Dershowitz.  My Ronn Torossian foundation gives to community – and there are many interesting quotes on the power of community:

  • In Israel overall, and on a kibbutz in particular, there is less value in virtual community and more virtue in a tangible connection between people.” Micha Balf
  • “We didn’t have the money for a Passover seder when I was a kid, so our family would show up at relatives’ homes unannounced. We were seder crashers.” Jerry Stiller
  • “The Sabbath and holidays are the primary reason for Jewish endurance and glory.” Judah Halevi
  • “If you want to help a friend out of the mire, don’t hesitate to get a little dirty.” Ba’al Shem Tov
  • “Devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning……Be compassionate, and take responsibility for each other. If we only learned those lessons, this world would be so much better a place.” Professor Morrie Schwartz
  • “The real community of man . . . is the community of those who seek the truth, of the potential knowers.” Allan Bloom
  • First mend yourself, and then mend others.” Jewish Proverb
  • “He who makes peace in his own home is as if he made peace in all Israel.” Avot d’Rabbi Natan
  • “The test of a people is how it behaves toward the old.  It is easy to love children,  Even tyrants and dictators make a point of being fond of children.  But affection and care for the old, the incurable, the helpless, are the true gold mines of a culture.” Abraham Joshua Heschel
