MARVIN MILLER never stepped into a Major League Baseball batter’s box, threw a two-seam fastball or fielded a groundball in the bigs. But when he died last Tuesday at age 95, it marked the passing of one of the absolute giants of the game.
Every now and then, we are reminded that sports are played by human beings with all of the fickleness, frailty and fallibility implicit in that. The last week or two has provided ample reminders of this fact—with interesting, disturbing and devastating consequences alike.

The NBA and NHL seasons are now at the midpoint or later, March Madness is approaching and pitchers and catchers are starting to report to Spring Training.
