Wednesday’s Wordapod
Created by Matthew J. Goldberg, author of Wordapodia, Volume One: An Encyclopedia of Real Fake Words
Those of us who have worked in, or received various levels of service in, the hospitality industry, should appreciate learning about one of the earliest and most gracious types of guest lodging.
Bedouin and Breakfast
Bedouin and Breakfast (n) – a hospitality tent set up by nomadic Arabs, who greet their fellow wanderers with water, pita and a good night’s sleep—all at a very good price
You Know What…?
The Bedouins are mostly Arabic-speaking, and are found in the Middle East, where they recently were said to comprise about 10% of the population. (Since they’re usually in motion, it’s hard to get a more accurate head count.)
Most Bedouins live a primitive lifestyle, with sheep and camel breeding being their main livelihoods. Some of these proud tribesmen do run Bedouin and Breakfast joints; the most famous franchise among them is called Tent 6. Their very ingenious slogan is, “If we had lights, we’d gladly leave them on for you.”
Please Note: The middle letters of hospitality are p-i-t-a. Is this just a coincidence? Much as I’d like to think that the words are related, I can find no etymological nexus. But that’s okay; I just had the great pleasure of writing “etymological nexus.”
